39TH EDITION SILVER PLAQUE: INTERNATIONAL ALPINE SOLIDARITY AWARD

PINZOLO, SEPTEMBER 18th 2010

Despite there being a host of excellent contenders for this year’s Targa d'Argento (Silver Shield), the prize committee, chaired by Cavalier Angiolino Binelli, unanimously chose the Alta Val di Fassa Mountain Rescue Team as the winner of the 39th edition of the International Alpine Solidarity Award for “their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice, putting others before themselves. These men, with their generous impulse, embodied the spirit of solidarity that empowers all Alpine volunteer rescue teams and which encapsulates the very essence of this award.”

The award is in recognition of Ervin, Diego, Luca and Alessandro, and the rescue operation that they carried out under extremely dangerous conditions in Val Lasties on 26 December 2009 and which ended in tragedy. The Targa d'Argento will be accepted by the rescue team that these men were, and always will be, part of, their memory living on in everyone who ever worked with them. The award will be presented during a solemn ceremony at Pinzolo Town Hall on Saturday 18 September at midday, which will be followed by a lunch held in their honour.
The decision to award the Alta Val di Fassa team, which has conducted numerous rescue operations, is, in fact, a tribute to all mountain rescue services, in recognition of their dedication, assertiveness and professionalism.
The International Alpine Solidarity Award will also be presenting in memoriam gold medals to the families of individuals who have lost their lives coming to the aid of those in need. Having received recommendations and deemed the significance of the sacrifices made by certain rescue workers worthy of recognition, this year committee members will be handing out 5 gold medals.
One will be given to the family of  Ger McDonnell, the Irish climber who died on August 2nd 2008 after rescuing three people from a Korean expedition to climb K2. Two Korean climbers and one Sherpa on the expedition had become trapped upside down in ropes, without any hope of escaping. After he freed them, McDonnell, from a separate Dutch expedition, was hit by the ice from a collapsed serac. McDonnell was the finest of mountaineers: he was someone who chose to take his outstanding generosity abroad, someone who took part in many rescue efforts, and someone who was capable of abandoning his own plans, such as conquering the world's most difficult peaks, to assist climbers in difficulty.
The other four medals will be given to the relatives of Stefano Da Forno, Fabrizio Spaziani, Marco Zago and Dario De Filip, the crew on board the helicopter that crashed following a landslide on the slopes of Monte Cristallo on 22 August 2009 during the mountain rescue and reconnaissance operation. The crew included a pilot, a doctor, a nurse and a helicopter technician. Together, they formed an outstanding team of experts which can be credited with having helped a large number of mountaineers and climbers tackling the Cortina d'Ampezzo mountains to safety.
As with previous years, there will be a programme of events in the days leading up to the award presentation involving schools, local people and the world of mountaineering.
